Discover how targeted marketing, based on in-depth market segmentation research, significantly boosts Miele’s stick vacuum cleaner market penetration. This case demonstrates how lifestyle segmentation (GeoTypes) helps you truly understand your target audience and steer effectively. An approach that helps your brand strategically grow in a competitive market.
Miele launched an updated stick vacuum cleaner and sought to understand how to smartly increase its market penetration. Through a unique collaboration between Blauw and GeoMarktprofiel, a specialist in Dutch household profile information, in-depth Miele market segmentation research was conducted. This provided Miele with valuable insight into considerations and needs when purchasing a stick vacuum cleaner. But which lifestyle segments should Miele focus on with its marketing?
Miele aimed to increase its market share and revenue with its updated stick vacuum cleaner but was unsure how to adjust its marketing. The brand already possessed GeoMarktprofiel data on household lifestyles. The challenge was to enrich this broad data with specific insights into purchasing criteria and preferences for stick vacuum cleaners to target advertising more effectively.
Blauw enriched GeoMarktprofiel’s 14 GeoType segments with specific consumer needs and considerations regarding the purchase of a stick vacuum cleaner. First, we qualitatively explored motivations with a research community, after which we quantitatively tested this among a larger group of consumers. This gave Miele a validated picture of the ‘path to purchase’ and the brand images of itself and competitors.
The research provided Miele with a clear overview of the GeoTypes to target most effectively for its marketing. Miele now understands exactly which purchasing criteria are essential for these households. This enables Miele to better comprehend its target audience for stick vacuum cleaners and deploy its marketing more effectively to increase market penetration.
Miele aligns its communication with the specific purchasing criteria and needs of the most promising GeoTypes. This ensures you address the right consumers with the right message.
Through targeted marketing and a deeper understanding of the target audience, Miele boosts its market penetration and sells more stick vacuum cleaners. This allows you to grow strategically in a competitive market.
Miele gains insight into unfulfilled needs and can align future product development accordingly. This ensures your innovations perfectly match what consumers truly desire.
By understanding how different GeoTypes perceive Miele and competitors, the brand can further refine its positioning. This helps you secure a stronger and more relevant place in the market.
Market segmentation research divides the market into distinct consumer groups with unique characteristics and needs. Understanding these segments allows you to tailor your marketing strategies more precisely, leading to higher campaign effectiveness and efficiency. For Miele, this meant finding the most receptive households for their stick vacuum cleaner.
GeoTypes are unique lifestyle segments of Dutch households, based on various data sources and continuous market research. They provide insight into buying behaviour, media usage, and leisure activities. By combining this with product-specific insights, as with Miele, you can target your audience with extreme precision based on concrete lifestyles and preferences.
The research combined qualitative insights from an online research community with quantitative data from an extensive questionnaire. Techniques such as an Implicit Association Test (IAT) were used to measure brand images and map out the ‘path to purchase,’ providing a complete picture of consumer behaviour and purchasing criteria.
Growth sometimes lies in a target audience, moment, or market you haven’t yet identified. We’ll map it out together.
